Kitchen confinement

July 20 – 24, 2013

Saturday was mostly uneventful – lazy and lots of reading. It wasnt until about 8pm that we finally left the house, much less the kitchen (the one warmer room). We had plans with some other workawayers down the road for an asado which we had honestly been dreading because we figured it would be outside in the freezing cold. It turns out, they had the kitchen table set with a roaring fire. It was wonderful! The company was great (a fellow American and three from France), the food was delicious, and it was good to get out of the house and be in the warm for a few hours. We also got a few pointers on things to do and places to see which is always helpful.

The cold continued for the next couple of days… We bided our time in the kitchen and outside of a few frozen pipes, a frozen gas tank, about a hundred blankets, and lots of firewood, there was not a whole lot happening in Andes Lands. Except we had been destroying some books and had depleted our kindle batteries several times over.

Meanwhile, we were starting to get a little worried about the cold… We had an Argentine couple scheduled to come to the B&B and its safe to say that the temperature inside the house at night was well below 30 degrees F. Not exactly the best secenario for any type of paying guest especially when there’s a language barrier involved.

The guests arrived Monday night and the temperature was still registering at sub-freezing. We had kept a fire going in their room all day and put heated blankets on the beds in hopes that they wouldn’t be running for the door if they at least had a warm room. I slept with my fingers crossed that they’d still be here the next morning. Breakfast rolled around and surprisingly enough they were still here with no complaints. They were a very, very nice couple who kept themselves busy and ended up staying the entire three nights even with the cold. How lucky was that! We of coursespent the entirety of that time happily huddled by the furnace in the kitchen.
