Pucon

After a rather uncomfortable 12 hour bus ride, we had arrived in Pucon. We came in hopes of being able to climb the Volcano Villarrica but the wind was too strong to make the ascent during our 3 days here. So instead, we spent the majority of our time walking. Thats right, of all the fabulous excursions we could have signed up for through the millions of tour companies lining the streets, we choose the other extreme.

Our extreme walking started off nicely with a light 12 mile trek. We were given a small paper map of Pucon upon arrival to the hostel and we thought it looked so small on the map that we didn’t need bikes or a cab to see one of the big waterfalls right outside town. So the walking commenced. We walked through town, along the main highway, down a long residential road, across a bridge that almost blew to pieces in the wind, and onto a windy country road. It was so beautiful that we hadn’t really realized that we’d walked 6 miles without coming across anything too significant other than some brilliant landscape. Which was fine for us but we were starting to question the whole walking idea… We pulled up a different map on Brent’s phone only to find that we were at least another 12 km from our destination… It became apparent that the map from our hostel was not at all to scale. Classic.

We thought this was hilarious. We sat laughing at our stupidity while eating some turkey sandwiches and watched other tourists in their 4 wheel drive rentals whip down the road. So after a good laugh, we set back down the road for another 6 miles. Towards the end, everything was burning and Brent was rewriting the Talking Heads song “Burning Down the House” to “Burning off the Beef”. A parody referring to the 3 months of beef we consumed in Argentina which is now being burned off with our accidental walking marathon. And through all of this foolishness, we were still in total appreciation of our surroundings and felt that it was still a day well spent.
